—It's Hard to Get Around the Wind
Sometimes, when I’m feeling like an absolute failure and that everything I’m doing is a means to no end, I listen to Alex Turner.
My favourite Turner lyric ever is the beginning of From Ritz to Rubble. I know I could have picked something pretentious and brimming with metaphor but this one encapsulates why there was so much hype about the debut album: astute yet often inane-sounding social commentary delivered in an immaculate Yorkshire accent, with few pauses for breath.
“Last nigh’ there’s two bouncers and one of them’s alreet the other one’s a scary-un ‘is way or no way totalitarian”
UPDATE: I’ve also decided I prefer Turner’s ‘Piledriver Waltz’ to the one featured on Suck It and See. It’s just got that soothing little spark to it.
