This is a video of a sinkhole I found out about a while ago, allegedly created when Soviet geologists accidentally tapped into the abundant natural gas deposits of Darvaz and the shaft collapsed, leaving a cavern smoking with poisonous gaseous substances. To avoid the release of such substances into the atmosphere and local population the geologists ignited the gas, hoping for the fire to subside within a matter of days.
This was over thirty-five years ago, and it’s still burning today.
